California’s public education system is vast: more than six million students in about 9,500 schools, which are governed by almost 1,000 elected school boards and regulated by a complex Education Code. The schools are funded through a finance system largely controlled by the legislature and governor.

By 2014, there’s an estimated need for over 170,300 additional teachers: 44,400 in elementary schools; 9,700 in middle schools; 24,800 in secondary schools; 50,200 postsecondary teachers; and 41,200 teacher assistants.
