Job Description
Music teachers instruct students how to read music and play instruments. General music teachers lay the foundation for music reading, rhythm, composing, and music history. Music teachers may also teach group classes, such as choir, band, orchestra, guitar, or music theater. Unlike elementary, middle, and secondary school teachers, music teachers have the option of teaching at a private studio or in their home.

Average Salary
Self-enrichment music teachers: $17.17/hr
Public or private school music teachers: $47,100-$51,180/yr

Educational Requirements
The main requirement for music teachers is musical expertise and experience. Many music teachers have another job and teach classes part-time in the evenings or on the weekend. If they want to teach at a school, they are subject to the same requirements as any public or private school teacher including obtaining a license through the state board of education. To teach music in a school, a bachelor’s degree in music education will be extremely helpful although may or may not be an absolute requirement.

Job Outlook
Employment of self-enrichment teachers is expected to grow 32%, much faster than average, through 2018. Music teachers should have better-than-average opportunities because, unlike other subjects, teaching music often requires hands-on instruction.
